You may not have this date marked on your calendar, but here at Lindstrom Air Conditioning and Plumbing, we love to celebrate World Plumbing Day on March 11. We’re sharing more about the evolution of plumbing and our company’s history here in South Florida with you in today’s blog so that you can feel confident taking your next shot on plumbing service with Lindstrom!
Early Days of Plumbing
The origins of plumbing can be traced to ancient civilizations’ need for public baths, drinking water, and waste removal. Early plumbing technology can be found in ancient Greek, Roman, Persian, Indian and Chinese cities.
One of the first major improvements on plumbing was with the 3rd-century aqueducts in Rome, which effectively removed wastewater and brought the widespread use of lead pipes. Unfortunately, the fall of Rome brought this plumbing revolution to a halt for more than 1,000 years.
The Next Round of Evolution
The first flushable toilet was invented in 1596 for Queen Elizabeth I, and the S-trap design was developed in 1775. Of course, it took time for flush toilets to popularize and spread in use among the public.
This common use coincided with the 1800s public health crisis when officials were finally forced to address the impact that poor plumbing was having on disease transmission. Rather than routing wastewater into public rivers or open sewage ditches, city planners began directing that waste into underground sewage systems.
Recent Innovations
In the last hundred years, copper piping replaced lead pipes as the awareness of lead poisoning spread. More recently, PVC pipe and fittings became the norm as a much more durable and cost-effective material. Modern technology has also advanced to save eco-friendly homeowners money on water bills by offering the low flush toilet and low flow plumbing.
