4 Signs Your Air-Ducts are Scarier than Halloween

Ducts

As Halloween approaches and ‘things go bump in the night’ we are here to tell you that what is outside your home may not be as scary as what is already inside.

We think indoor air pollution is scarier than Halloween!

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “Indoor air levels of many pollutants may be 2-5 times, and occasionally 100 times higher than outdoor levels.” Indoor air pollutants are of even greater concern when people spend a large majority of time indoors, as much as 90 percent, claims the EPA.

While you may be able to see some of the dirt and dust that your air duct system is recirculating in your home, what you cannot see is even scarier.

Many people don’t realize they may have bacteria, dust mites, mold and even vermin living inside of their air ducts. Living with a dirty or contaminated air duct system is unnecessary with the advantages of whole-house duct cleaning.

Why Should You Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned?

A duct cleaning can improve your air quality by removing contaminants from the source and the recirculated air in your home. And airborne contaminants and pollutants are never good for those who suffer from allergies, asthma or other respiratory ailments.

Our General Manager here at Lindstrom Air Conditioning and Plumbing, Joe Canosa, also reminds Florida homeowners that a whole-house duct cleaning can offer more benefits to a homeowner than cleaner, healthier air.

“A quality duct cleaning will help remove contaminants from your entire cooling or ventilation system. Contaminants force your system to work harder and decrease its efficiency and lifespan.”

So in other words, a cleaner duct system can equal a longer life for your cooling system.

How Often Should You Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned?

While experts vary on how often you need to clean the air duct system in your home, many agree every 3-5 years at the minimum. Those that live in warmer climates like we do may want to consider having their air ducts cleaned more often.

According to Angie’s List and NADCA, the HVAC Inspection, Maintenance and Restoration Association, in addition to having your air ducts cleaned every 3-5 years, you may also want to consider a cleaning when:

• You move into a new home
• You build a new home
• You complete a major home renovation or remodeling project
• You have pets at home who shed fur or dander

Wondering If You Need Your Air Ducts Cleaned?

We don’t blame you for wondering if your air ducts are dirty enough to justify a professional cleaning. Aside from a professional consultation with a reputable HVAC company, there are a few ways you can tell you are in need of a duct cleaning.

4 Signs Its Time to Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned

1. If you notice insects crawling into or out of your air ducts, double that for vermin
2. You turn on your air conditioner, and a cloud of dust or debris puffs out with the conditioned air
3. If you are afraid to look inside of your air ducts for too long in case something becomes visible in the black
4. You can’t remember ever having your air ducts cleaned, and you’ve lived in your home for ten years
