4 Reasons Your Air Conditioner is Freezing

Freezing AC

Believe it or not there is such a thing as your air conditioner getting too cold.

Simply put, your air conditioner can actually freeze up. There are many reasons why this can happen.

Whether it is a central air conditioner or a window air conditioner is irrelevant.

Your air conditioner is freezing up because something is either causing Freon in your system to expand more than it is designed to, or something is preventing the air in your house from transferring its heat into your system.

Top 4 Reasons Your Air Conditioner is Freezing:

  1. Insufficient airflow across your air conditioner’s evaporator coil.
  2. Your air conditioner is low on Freon.
  3. You are running your air conditioner when the outside air is below 62 degrees.
  4. There is a mechanical failure (kink in refrigerant lines, a blow fan is not running, etc.)

Your air conditioner is designed to drop the temperature of your house by taking heat from it, if your air conditioner is not properly blowing your inside air over the evaporator coil, then this heat exchange can’t take place and the Freon that should be removing heat from your home is not.

Your air conditioner can freeze up due to lower pressure inside the system. This is because there is now less Freon in your system but it is still being forced to expand the same amount, the more expansion equals a cooler temperature.

Air conditioners are designed to function in a specific temperature range. If you are running your air conditioner when the outside air is below 62 degrees, then the pressure inside of your system will drop and this can cause your air conditioner to freeze up.

A frozen air conditioner will not cool your home properly and can damage your air conditioner. This problem will not solve itself. If you are having trouble with your air conditioner freezing up it should be addressed immediately.
